In December, something truly special began at our ECS4Kids West Side location: a vibrant Community Garden built through the power of collaboration, care, and commitment. This project was made possible thanks to the incredible teamwork of our Community Advocacy Board, ECS4Kids parents, dedicated volunteers, and partners like the Just Food Network.
Why a Community Garden?
For many families in our program, access to fresh, affordable produce can be a challenge. Our garden is more than just a source of nutritious fruits and vegetables. It is a solution to food insecurity, a hands-on classroom, and a space for families to learn about sustainability. Research shows that children involved in gardening programs are more likely to eat their daily servings of vegetables, and families can save up to $720 annually by growing their own food. Every dollar invested in a garden can yield six times its value in produce.

How We Built It
The garden was designed with regenerative practices in mind. We diverted resources like cardboard, five truckloads of paper, and locally sourced soil made from organic matter that would have otherwise gone to landfills. Together, volunteers and families prepared garden beds, planted seedlings and fruit trees, and created pollinator-friendly spaces while learning about nutrition and sustainability.
What It Means for Our Community
This garden is more than plants. It is a symbol of growth, resilience, and hope. It will provide fresh produce, improve nutrition, and empower families with knowledge they can take home. Beyond the harvest, it is a place where children and parents can connect with nature, learn life skills, and experience the joy of growing something together.
We are excited to see this garden thrive and to share its benefits with our ECS4Kids families. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. You have planted seeds of change that will grow for years to come.
